Frequently Asked Questions:
1. How do I sign up for your service?
You can buy the device which plugs into your car from our website, then download our app for free. Installation instructions will be included with the device when it arrives.
2. Can I put more than one car on the device?
You can register multiple cars for monitoring. Just be sure to update the app on your phone to match the car you want monitored.
3. Can I use an iPhone?
Today our app only works on the Android system. Please check back as we will be adding iOS in the near future.
4. I don’t have a smart phone, can you monitor my car?
We need a smart phone to connect with the OBD Device. However, you can send in your service records to use so we can notify you via email when certain services need to be done on your car.
5. What happens if my device fails?
We will send you a replacement device at no charge.
6. How new of a car is required in order for Carvoyant to read the codes?
OBD was required by law in all cars since 1996, but was manufacturers were not fully compliant until 2000. Our system will read most vehicle information from 1996 – 2000, but the information is more consistent on vehicles built after 2000.
7. I like the idea of having service records scanned and available online. How can I get my records to you?
We will send you a self address and stamped envelope to mail us your old records. You can also scan and email to support@carvoyant.com. Finally, some people maintain their own typed up version of records. Go ahead and send us these records as well.
8. What will you do with my old service records?
Our intention is to provide you a place to store old service records making it easier for you to cross reference prior work or to share information with a new buyer of your car. In the future we hope to develop intelligence off this information (i.e. let you know if a part is still under warranty, when you might need your next routine work done, etc); however this feature is not developed and we will notify you if we intend to use this information giving you an option to ‘opt out’ if you prefer.
9. You reference the ‘check engine’ light a lot, but what else will Carvoyant do for me?
Our service of course will notify you when your check engine light is triggered, and why. We connect this message to a mechanic. We will also track your miles and let you know when it is time for routine maintenance (i.e. 45,000 mile check up or oil change). Long term we hope to inform you what needs to be done and help you save money to get the work done.
10. With what make/model of vehicles is this compatible?
In the USA, OBD was required by law in all cars since 1996, but most manufacturers were not fully compliant until 2000. Our system will read most vehicle information from 1996 – 2000, but the information is more consistent on vehicles built after 2000 – as long as the vehicle was built for sale in the US – there is a sticker under the hood or on the driver’s side door jam which reads “OBD2 Certified” this vehicle will work on our system.
11. I don’t live in the USA, can I still use your service – I could sure use it?
We are currently building out our national network of shops in the USA. You could buy our device, but we can not make any assurances at this time what vehicles in other countries are OBD2 compliant, nor will we be able to connect your car to a repair shop. So our service in any other country is a few years away from being helpful.
